Piano Lessons
I teach a varied and complete approach to jazz piano encompassing all styles and influences from Art Tatum to Brad Meldhau. We look at solos and tunes, breaking down the harmonic and melodic structures. Drawing from my teachers, I use ideas that I studied from Jaki Byard on Errol Garner and Art Tatum. From Harold Danko, modal concepts which Chick Corea used. From Charlie Shoemake, Straight ahead jazz soloing and chord voicings. From Lyle Murphy, jazz composition and harmony which influenced Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea and Oscar Peterson who also was a student. Studio piano and the art of playing a ballad from Terry Trotter.
Using all of these influences, I carefully watch students to see if they are swinging and using correct musicianship including rhythmic precision.

Tim has been a great instructor. Prior to him, I spent about 6 months trying to self-teach jazz piano and made almost no progress. After two months of playing with Tim, I can now play a simple improvisation over a 12-bars blues, which is something I was unable to achieve on my own. Tim provides sheet music for exercises to practice and videos of bass lines to practice along with. He also gives guidance on items that he wants you to practice each week so that you can effectively structure your practice sessions.

Tim has been great to work with! He's super easy going and patient, but also will definitely let you know where you can improve. I was a passable piano player when I started taking lessons with Tim, but he's helped me improve my fundamentals tremendously.

Tim was able to meet me where I am musically, see the gaps in my knowledge and challenge me to master some fundamentals even as I explore improvisation.

I've been taking lessons from Tim now for about 6 weeks. He's a very talented musician and provides excellent instruction. I appreciate his curriculum, moving through musical styles (so far the blues and a few ballads, now progressing into more upbeat tunes) alongside more technique-based work including scales, modes, solos, and fingering. For most exercises and songs, he has video accompaniments to play along to, which are a really helpful resource for practicing. As a self taught amateur pianist, I would highly recommend Tim to anyone else wanting to really step up their skills.

Taking lesson's with Tim has been an awesome experience so far! He's a phenomenal teacher. From the first day, he's been tailoring my lessons to match both my skill level and the styles of music that I'm interested in playing (jazz/blues mostly). He's giving me an extremely palatable balance of theory, exercises, and song playing, and I genuinely look forward to sitting down and practicing every day. From scales, to songs, to solos, he has me thinking and working with music in a way that's really improved my understanding and abilities. He also has an amazing ear, and he's been invaluable in pointing out areas of weakness that I can improve upon. He's a phenomenal pianist as well, and I would honestly pay money just to watch him play! I highly recommend Tim!

Tim is great to work with! I have been taking for a few months now and already feel much more confident about my improvisation skills (coming from a long classical background). I have taken lessons from many teachers over the years and Tim has top-notch knowledge and clear delivery of information. He has also been very flexible with my wild schedule. I highly recommend this pro!

Working with Tim has been great! I have some experience with classical piano, but I want to learn how to improvise with jazz / blues. I feel like I’ve been making significant progress through Tim’s sheet music and training videos. I’m excited to keep working with him.

I have been taking piano lessons with Tim and I highly recommend him as a teacher! We have been working on improvisation and comping in jazz and blues. He is very thorough in his teaching approach. One can see that he has a very clear vision in the way he structures his lessons and the path forward. Lessons are built on top of the previous ones in a very logical fashion, and tailored to the skills of the student. He is very personnable and patient, and also an incredibly talented musician. He provides his students with original material about the pieces that they are learning, which greatly enhances the learning experience. This material includes for instance videos of him playing the pieces, play along tracks and written solos for study. He is an excellent teacher and I look forward to every lesson with him!

I’ve really enjoyed working with Tim. When I came to Tim I told him I had some piano experience but I was pretty raw in fundamentals. I really appreciate that Tim took the time to see where I was and meet me there. It’s kept the work challenging and given me a drive to continue to improve because of his personalized approach. Tim is thoughtful and patient, so going to a lesson doesn’t feel like I’m going to the dentist. It feels more like we are working together toward something and for that reason any anxieties I might have about continuing my studies are allayed. He also supplies a wealth of materials, from lead sheets, to PDFs that illuminate fundamentals of chord progressions, to play-along bass lines and recordings of him playing through exercises and songs we are working on. These things have been an incredible help, particularly because our lessons are virtual. I really appreciate the time Tim puts in to make sure his students have all the necessary tools to succeed. I’d highly recommend Tim to anyone who wants to study jazz. Since many people are studying virtually these days, you can really have your pick of the litter, and I’d pick Tim every time.

Tim Lyddon is a thoughtful teacher who has a student-centered approach to helping you learn from where you are. He cares about building knowledge (theory) as much as skill, and kindly makes learning piano an enjoyable experience.

If you are looking to break free from the prison of only being able to read sheet music, Tim can help you. He is clearly very talented and he introduces music theory concepts patiently and methodically. Each lesson builds on the last. He is very professional and responsive. He provides videos to reference and is very helpful in intuitively answering questions about concepts you might be struggling with. I’ve played piano for a number of years without instruction but I can tell that I’ll be much more competent after sticking with his lesson program. The remote lessons are also extremely convenient for people with busy schedules. I highly recommend.

After two lessons with Tim, several things are already clear: He quickly susses your skill level and desires and begins his work right there. His lessons thoughtfully and skillfully build on each other. He makes you think. He challenges you, but only, I believe, if you want to be challenged. If, like me, you've been trying for about a year to learn to play jazz, you could probably take a lesson a week for a decade, and he'd still be helping you improve. When he teaches remotely, he's good with the technology, and although your phone camera allows him to see your fingers, he really only needs to use his ear. He's at his piano while you're at yours, and he'll sometimes play to demonstrate a point and to develop your own ear. Between lessons, he texts or emails practice materials, and he includes helpful and instructive videos of himself playing effortlessly the homework you need to prepare for your next session. He's kind, helpful, good humored, patient, and whatever other adjectives could be used to describe a terrific teacher. I count myself lucky to have found him.

After just three lessons so far, I have learned so much from Tim. I commented to my wife that up till now I've been painting with just primary colors in my piano playing, and now with the jazz concepts Tim is showing me I'm seeing the infinite possibility of color variations. I'm getting just what I was looking for: someone to show me how to take my playing to the next level in creativity, technique and performance. Tim is very personable, easy to converse and work with--and still keeps me on the straight and narrow to play properly and with proper technique (less pedal!). He's also very accommodating with my schedule and environment, being a working father of three and a husband, juggling lots in schedule and in my house. Even over Zoom, our lessons have been very productive. I highly recommend Tim!

Tim is the best music teacher I’ve ever had! He’s very knowledgable and articulate in his explanation whenever I come to him with questions. Tim always adapts quickly to student’s interests and abilities, easily pinpointing my areas of improvement throughout our classes. Tim is patient, responsive, punctual, and is generous with his time for students - he's willing offer advice after class as well if you are curious to learn! What’s more, what he demonstrates on piano always sounds nice and inspires me to learn and play more. Tim has good sense of humor too, which makes the classes fun to take. Overall it’s been a great pleasure to work with Tim and I give him my highest recommendation.

I have long yearned to play what I can hear in my head. Tim has quickly figured out what I need to learn and to practice, and after just 2 lessons I am already making great progress. He also is very patient with my questions and comes quickly to the answer I need. And he inspires me to practice! I will stay with Tim until my Carnegie Hall debut, which can't be far off now! Brad

As a teacher, Tim was both patient and inspiring in equal measure. He was able to explain complicated concepts in a way that was easy to understand, and, perhaps more importantly, helped me find my own voice. He was encouraging, flexible and supportive.

Tim creates a systematic course-flow of piano lessons upon the needs, points of improvement and strength of his individual student. Aside from his deep understanding of music theory and performance, he also includes additional important topics which helps to develop a piano player's skill, knowledge and overall interest in music.

Tim is a class act all the way around. He is extremely knowledgeable and experienced in jazz piano teaching, performing, and recording. He has an excellent sensitive touch and is very flexible in his teaching styles. He can arrange and play virtually almost any kind of music including: pop, jazz, boogie, Latin. Rock, blues, ballads, and funk. Highly recommended!

I think Tim's greatest asset as a teacher is that he has a great ear. I don't mean that only in terms of being a talented musician and composer, but also that he listens to his students and creates a course of study that suits their interests and goals. He gave me a deeper knowledge and appreciation of jazz, a solid understanding of music theory, and a strong foundation from which I could grow and develop as a musician. I give Tim Lyddon my highest recommendation.
